Bandit S2 Review – The Perfect All Round Small Kite?

OUR EXPECTATIONS

Why we chose the Bandit S2? Well after almost a decade and a half as one of the most celebrated all round kites F-ONE decided to split the Bandit range going forward with the Bandit and the Bandit S. The split has been received well with the S2 being the second version of new range. We were keen to try the S2 as not just a surf kite but an all around kite. Our hope? a kite that is fun in waves, great for foiling and hopefully still good on a twin tip when the wind picks up. Did the S2 deliver? You bet!!! Read on to find out just how.

Between lockdowns we got out on the S2 in a range of conditions, light wind foiling, squalls on a twin tip, fun conditions in the waves…
What did we learn??? This is a kite made for all around fun!

THE SPIEL

This year we present the second edition of the Bandit S, with major improvements to take wave riding, strapless freestyle or even foiling to the next level.

The Bandit S provides exceptional stability and control with total direct control of the steering anywhere on the bar throw. The Bandit S offers firm, precise and ultra-light bar pressure along with super smooth power delivery. Homogenous traction and amazing agility the Bandit S has been redesigned for extended wind range.

The Bandit S2 is reactive, light and drivey making it the ideal kite for foiling. The stability of the S2 during the drift is a great comfort on a foil especially when your lines are slack during turns or carves.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Out of the bag the build quality is clear. Everything is refined as you would expect with a kite coming from a line of 14 iterations. Every element of the kite says quality and simplicity. A clean panel layout and a clean bridal with direct rear line connection gives instant confidence as you rig up. The kite utilizes a hybrid 135g fabric on the trailing edge that is noticeably stronger than ripstop yet lighter than dacron. The panel layout is clean and again looks solid and utilizes Teijin Technoforce fabric, a light crisp feeling fabric. Again quality is the overwhelming impression out of the bag. It’s clear this is a kite that will give many seasons of performance and take a beating if need be. Inflation is super simple with the Reactor valve is super quick, easy for both high flow inflation and deflation. A velcro cover keeps it out of sight, out of mind once the kite is inflated.

The clean bridle and panel layout provide a clean design and sharp all round performance.

In the air the kite is everything F-ONE promised. Scroll back up and read the F-ONE claims and once you try this kite we’re certain you’ll be nodding along as you read. The kite is surprisingly drivey, one of the things we thought may have been compromised in the hunt for a perfect surf specific kite was low end grunt but the S2 is firm, quite powerful and direct. Even on a twin-tip we could get going early due to the firm pull and the kites maneuverability. As F-ONE mention repeatedly, one of the S2’s standout performance areas is direct control throughout the bar throw. We found this the stand out feature of the kite, always able to precisely control the kite.

Drift is a word always thrown around when wave kites are mentioned and predominately foiling we found that the S2 excelled in this space. Mindlessly carving towards the kite, following swells the kite patiently sits at the edge of the window. Again the great part was that as soon as you want to get going upwind again the kite is solid, relatively powerful and always responsive.

As mentioned above we were hoping the S2 would provide an all around experience beyond just surf. Foiling was a dream with the kite but one of the big surprises was the performance on a twin tip, sharp direct solid power delivery got us up and going even earlier than we expected yet the solid direct control through the bar throw means the kite is well behaved even as the wind picked up. The direct steering also allowed for impressive boost, decent height and reasonable hang time and again, a direct connection enabling intuitive kite control whilst in flight. For sure this is a kite that can do it all and exceed expectations while doing it!

The bar, the LYNX Bar, continues the clean yet premium experience . Our test kite was paired with the 52/45cm convertible size. In our opinion at this size (9m) the 45/38cm bar would be more than sufficient as the kite is quick and easy to steer. The lines are noticeably stiff to handle and this makes them easy to manage on the beach with tangles hard to create and F-ONE mention they help stiffen up the responsive feeling of the kite, something we noticed immediately in flight. We preferred the 45cm inner setting. In your hands the grip has a great feel, the chicken loop/safety system and below the bar swivel are clean and effective. The kite’s fantastic behavior meant we never needed to utilize the safety but we did a few test runs just to see and it performed impeccably. We did find it a bit of a challenge to pull the flag out safety line back through the chicken loop when testing the safety but with a solid pull could get it back through, it could potentially be hard out of your depth or other complicated situations but if there was ever tension in the lines (kite somehow relaunching) it would simply pull back into place under that pressure so not really anything to worry about.

1 – Quick release – we found it super easy to grab and release. 2 – Chicken loop retainer. 3 – Safety release – we found it super functional albeit took some effort to pull it back to reset position. 4 – Swivel – clean and functional, much like the rest of the kite and bar! 5 – Chicken loop and safety line, plastic sleeved for durability. 6 – Depower – easy to reach, tidy, again premium and clean finish. 7 – Line float. 8 – Adjustable bar ends – we found it easy to move between 52 and 45cm. 9 – Firm rubber bar ends with elastic loops to keep everything in place between sessions. 10 – Bar grip – solid feeling, great firm grip at all times. 11 – Stiffer than normal lines – easy to walk out on the beach and F-ONE claim they’re stiffer leading to better kite response which is seems to work as you fly the kite.

WHO WILL LOVE IT?

The Bandit S2 truly is one of the most usable kites we’ve ever ridden. Beyond pure surf performance it has plenty of use cases. We did use it in some small waves and it’s surf performance is beyond doubt with the drift combined with responsive control at all times. We predominately rode the S2 on a foil and found it to be everything you could hope for in this discipline. The most impressive trait was the sharp performance on a twin tip meaning the S2 is a great choice for a smaller all round kite. Given the S2 is available 1 metre increments from 4m through to 10m it’s possible to pair it with a bigger Bandit and have a all wind quiver that will not disappoint.

WHO WON’T LOVE IT?

Honestly – no-one… This is one of the most usable kites on the market without doubt. You will not ever feel lacking. It seems to us that the main use case for the original Bandit over the S2 could be pure boosting performance. Unless you’re aiming for the moon (doesn’t mean you cant send it when the wind gets up) then the S2 will be a great choice.

• This week from 28-31st January Cotton Tree Maroochydore hosts Australia’s National Kiteboarding Titles.
•  Held just off the Cotton Tree Sandbags in the Maroochy river mouth, it is a free to attend event where spectators can have a great view from the Sandbags and sand dunes.
• At this stage preliminary heats will be Thursday and Friday with the Finals being on Saturday and Sunday. For up to date information and starting times please view the facebook event page here https://www.facebook.com/events/701227307154344
• Spectators can park at the beach end of ‘Cotton Tree Parade’ and walk North via the beach about 300 metres to get to the river.

Once a year the Kiteboarding Freestyle National Titles are held at a windy location in Australia. This year from 28-31 January, with thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council they will be held in beautiful Maroochydore Qld in the Cotton Tree river mouth, where competitors from all over Australia will be busting out their best freestyle tricks in aim to take out the prestigious National Championship for Juniors, Men, Women and Masters.

“I am excited to be heading back to the Sunshine Coast to defend my Australian title at one of the best national locations for kiteboarding, Cotton Tree.”
Ewan Jaspan (Current National Kiteboarding Champion)

Cotton Tree river mouth has been a popular spot for kiteboarders since the early 2000’s. It is a perfect setup for Kiteboarders and is also a great spot for spectators to watch all the action.

From Thursday the 28th January spectators will be able to watch the best of the best, including many of our own local heroes battle it out on the aquatic playground. This is a Freestyle competition where the aim is to ‘throw’ as many ‘unhooked’ handle passes, grabs, and aerial tricks as possible. Similar to that of wakeboarding… minus the boat of course! There will also be an Expression session for social members, which is a more fun and relaxed event, boasting some great prizes  and gives intermediate riders the chance to get their photo taken by several professional photographers. National Kiteboarding Magazine ‘Freedom Kitesurfing’ will be there taking photos so competitors may even find themselves in a magazine!

“Cotton Tree is my local and favourite kiteboarding location in Australia. All we need is some great wind and this will be a fantastic competition.”
Ollie Jacobs – Editor Freedom Kitesurfing Magazine

Kiteboarding has come a long way since it began in the late 90’s, and now the equipment and sport is very safe. It is a fantastic sport to get fit, have fun and make lots of new friends who are passionate about living life to it’s fullest. If you are interested in this exciting sport please come down to watch, have a chat with some of the riders or various volunteers – there is FREE learn to kite intro lessons on Saturday and Sunday for the general public from local shop KITETHRILLS, please visit https://www.kiteboardingaus.com.au/classes/16509/ to register your interest, plus many other great activities. Bring you eskis, and beach chairs and make a day or 2 of it!

The finals of the competition will be held (wind dependent) over the Saturday and Sunday.
If the trees are swaying it’s windy, and that means it’s on! Hope to see you there.

The event is proudly sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Council.

Choosing the Correct Fins for Kitesurfing with Ryland Blakeney

Kitesurf Air

Pics by Gordon Pettigrew

FKM: So, tell us a little bit about what fin systems you like to use?
RYLAND: Well, about 99% of my boards use Future boxes. I think they’re a way stronger connection to the board for all types of fins. And especially for kiting. I’ve been using Future bases for probably 10, 15 years, or whenever they came out I guess.

FKM: Why do you prefer future boxes over FCS?
RYLAND: The original FCS 1s with just the two single tabs, when they came out, they were great. For surfing they work, because if you hit the reef, they snap easily and you’re not going to rip out a box that much.
But they also can break a little bit too easily kiting, just even on a bottom turn, not even hitting anything. I’ve had them snap on me for years, so that’s sort of why I’ve gone away from FCS 1 style. With FCS 2, now have got the click in, click out, which is a bonus. But if you do knock something on the back of your fin, whether it be washed up on a sandbar or something, or dumped by a wave and the back of the fin hits sand or reef, they can pop out. So I end up chucking a screw in them anyway. So if you’re going to put a screw in, I think the Future base having one big solid base, from the front of the fin to the back of the fin, and one screw is by far the most robust and most uncomplicated system out there.
And that’s what I would recommend for anyone looking at a new board.
I know Duotone do that multi-box so you can run Futures or FCS. That’s an excellent system. Especially if all your boards now are FCS and you want to move to a stronger base, with the option of being able to put Futures in.

Kitesurfing Barrel

FKM: Ok and your choice for fins?
RYLAND: The last two years all I’ve been running is Quobba fins. Up until about a year ago, I was mainly using the orange, which are the mediums, but now they’ve got a large available, which they didn’t have before. So I’ve been using a large a lot more. I’m around 95kgs, So I find around sloppy two-foot beach breaks, I’ve been running the lime green large as my two side fins, and an orange medium as my centre fin on a thruster set up. And then, if I’ve been playing around with quads, I’ve been using the lime green large as my front sides. And then for the rears, I’ve just been mixing it up with a bunch of old Future fins and that, that I have lying around. Just playing around with a few different styles. But yeah, probably 99% of the time riding Quobba fins solely.

FKM: How important is it to you to use quality fins when your kiting?
RYLAND: With kiting the main thing people need to understand is you require a lot stronger fins than you do when you’re surfing. Because when you surf, if you have a really good session and you get 15 waves that go for 10 seconds each, you’re only on your board two to three minutes in a whole surf. Whereas, if you go for a kite, generally, I’m on my board an hour and a half continually edging against my fins, turning a lot harder against them than I do surfing. So just the overall strain is a lot more on your fins when you’re kiting, as opposed to when you’re surfing. So you do need a really strong fin if you want them to last, and you want them to hold when you’re at the bottom turning, or coming off the top. So yeah, a durable, strong fin is something that I look for.

FKM: What makes Quobba fins good for kiting over other fins? I’ve seen they have a pretty unique shape what is all that about?
RYLAND: The whole design and idea behind it is to create a vortex or vortex’s and lift, which then creates less drag. I’m not exactly sure of all the scientific terms, but that’s the general idea without getting too techy. They studied the shape of aeroplane wings and also looked at the worlds fastest fish and their tails and side fins etc. After years and years of research and prototypes have come up with a unique fin that isn’t a gimmick, with studies and testing results to back up all their claims. Let’s be honest; fins haven’t changed much in the last 20 years. Different materials and flex patterns are about it. But as far as new shapes go not many companies have done much in this design area, so they are onto something pretty unique, and have the next 20+ years covered with every patent under the sun worldwide. With kiting, we have a lot more power we can harness and generate as opposed to surfing. Traditional fins can only handle so much speed before they max out and cavitate, and you speed wobble or skip out on a turn. But with this design, the speed you can hang onto is a lot higher which in turn means you can also drive and push a shit load harder off your fins than a regular shape.

FKM: And what types of construction are available?
RYLAND: QUOBBA fins are working on a couple of new models and products at the moment. They use a polymer and glass construction at the moment. This year they are also releasing something called carbon glass, which is a new more robust polymer glass construction- available any day now to the public. Not sure on the exact ratio, but 30 to 40% carbon, and 60-70% polymer. And then they’ve also got a full carbon series coming out, which is mainly carbon and polymer.
The carbon series, I’d say, is for bigger waves or guys that like riding powered up and like a real stiff fin. Also, probably great for towing and that sort of thing. But general strength and all-around riding, I’d recommend the carbon glass. It’s a good compromise between the two. A right blend of the two products and way, way more robust than anything else out there.

FKM: So thruster or quad set up. How do you usually kite, and why?
RYLAND: The old thruster versus quad debate. I’ve always been a thruster man myself. I do like quads, but they’re not as predictable. So by that I mean some conditions they suit it well, and then the next day you might take the board out with a quad set up, and I hate it, you know? So it just depends on day to day with quads, where I find with thrusters, they always feel good. There might be some days where a quad might be better suited, but I never have a bad session on a thruster set up. So that’s why I go thrusters, just because I find that, generally, they’re more suited to most conditions.

FKM: WHY do you put a smaller fin in your back centre fin?
RYLAND: Size-wise, having a slightly smaller trailer, just loosens the board up. My local kite break is generally one to two foot. The waves are pretty short and dumpy. So just having a board that’s a bit looser, you can throw it around a lot easier with a smaller back fin. Just makes it more fun. As soon as I chuck a bigger fin in the back, I notice that my turns are a lot more drawn out. Probably a bit more controlled with a bigger fin. But yeah, I like to slide the fins out and I’m just having more fun in smaller surf with a smaller fin in the rear.

FKM: So, do you experiment with different stiffness?
RYLAND: Again, it just depends on what conditions I’m in. Big barreling waves, you want a pretty stiff fin, but you want a bit of flex too so you can stall out your bottom turn, then really drive off your fins and get a bit of flick and spring so you can backdoor a section if it’s barreling.

Small surf, real stiff fins – I don’t like. When you’re coming off the bottom, you get that extra hold, but you also don’t get that spring to flick off the bottom, or flick out of the top that you do when your fins have got a bit of flex to them. So yeah, it depends on the conditions. Generally, medium to small surf I like a flexier fin. And then medium surf, a medium flex fin. And then real big surf or towing, I’ll generally pick a pretty stiff fin that will just hold the best.

Thanks Ryland!

Kite Review – Ocean Rodeo 14.5m Flite Aluula

Ocean_Rodeo_Flite_Aluula_Freedom_Kitesurf

Ok, you have all heard the gossip, perhaps listened to the lads at your kite beach talking about this revolutionary new material ALUULA Ocean Rodeo are using that is going to change kite design and performance permanently. Game changer they say, revolutionary like the bow kite as they say? Well, is it true? Yes. No B*llshit!

You can google what the ALUULA material is, but I can summarise this review, with its main point of focus in one sentence:

The 14.5m Flite weighs just 2.2 kgs.
There you go. Yes, that is lighter than your 9 metre.

I could end this review here, I mean, is not the main aim of every large kite designed for light wind to try and be as lightweight as possible, so it easily stays in the air?

Ok, so lightweight material is NOT everything. Yes, your old classic Slingshot 15m fuel still pulls like a truck on roids; but if you combine lightweight material, with something more robust and much stiffer than dacron used on the leading edge (the big blowy up bit for the newbies :D) how would that equate to better performance?

WELCOME TO THE NEW ERA OF KITE DESIGN:
‘THE MATERIALS RACE.’

JAJA DING DONG, Your leading edge is firm and strong…

Ocean Rodeo 14.5m Flite Aluula

The perfect C shape arc of the kite is what helps generate so much speed, and overall smoothness.
When it flattens out (or over sheets) in a gust, it might pull you onto your toes or stall, and then there is the opposite warp of the kite where the C shape deepens which can also make the pull of the kite inconsistent. So if you can minimise this warping, this creates a very smooth ride and consistent power pull throughout the whole wind window.

Brett from Windswell who also tried this kite out said something interesting “It feels like it’s got a dead spot in the middle of the power zone. That’s not a bad thing, just have to get used to it”

Brett had a good point. And yes it might take you a few rides to get used to it because it is different. The thing is, it’s not a dead spot – it just distributes power more evenly, over the whole wind window. Where your traditional kites might have the apex of power at 10-15% which is smack bang straight downwind, the Ocean Rodeo Aluula Flites increase this to something like 30% of the window. So for those that like the intense kick of this smaller power apex zone, it will take some adjustment to your riding.

Relaunching the Ocean Rodeo 14.5 Flite Aluula

Relaunching the Ocean Rodeo 14.5 Flite Aluula

THE RELAUNCH
Having a stiffer LE also means your relaunches are super easy. The kite does not warp easily, even in the water, meaning it will stand up without going soggy or collapsing even in the lightest of winds.

THE RANGE
A stiffer LE means you can depower these kites to the maximum your bar allows, without the kite flapping and becoming unresponsive.
To begin with, we tested this kite in light winds (12-15 knots on a twin-tip) which it excels in as is to be expected; but then the winds picked up out of nowhere; with this improved performance when fully depowered, it handled high winds surprisingly very well.
Once we got used to it, it was a pleasure to use right up to 23-25 knots. So that is a MASSIVE range! We enjoyed riding this kite so much that even on these windy days, we would bypass the smaller kites and opt for a BIG AIR session on the 14.5 flite. Woooooo hang time PLUS!

TURNING SPEED AND PULL
The stiffness of the LE equates into a much quicker and far more responsive turning ability.  This 14.5 metre turns like that of a traditional 12. And surprisingly when depowered outperforms a 12; I would say similar to a depowered 10m!
Pull wise it is similar to that of a 15m, but with an increased ability on the edge of the window means this will replace many peoples’ 17-18 metre kites.

THE TREE TEST
Yes, we did put this kite into the trees, twice actually! We don’t have photos to show this as we were freaking out as you do… But on both times the LE actually hit some sharp branches, and both the LE and sailcloth came out unscathed! THAT’S A DOUBLE PASS!

THE PLAYGROUND TEST
Yes, we also put it into a kids playground. BEWARE this kite is so light when you put it on the ground at the end of your session put something on top of it. Or it will blow away with a mere puff! And so that is how it ended up wrapped around a kids playground. Little Tommy wasn’t too happy, haha! But in the end, all were unscathed both Tommy and the kite.
PASS!

Ryan Parsons from Queensland

Ryan Parsons from Queensland

THE DRIFT
For both foiling and surfing this kite is a pleasure to use. Personally, I found it a little too cumbersome for a foil (the 12m Flite would be better suited), although Jonno from the Sunshine Coast did send me videos of himself foiling in 5 knots on this. Ryan Parsons from Qld loves it also (pictured)… and he rips on the foil with it!

Surfing, I had a ball on this kite. I would never normally go surf kiting on something this size, as generally a 13m plus size kite is just too slow in the waves. But this is a whole new game! It is so lightweight in the air that in light wind and medium-sized swell days it will keep up with you as your slashing away at the face. Even with the kite dead high at 12 it keeps up with you! And being able to go out into waves when it is only 12-15 knots is a special thing because the waves are still clean.
BIG PASS!

Ocean-Rodeo-Flite-Aluula-Freedom-Kitesurf-Surf-Ollie-JacobsANY CONS
We did snag the wingtip in the bridle twice, over the four weeks we tried it out. But to be fair, a kite this size with this much range in power and performance; it’s going to happen occasionally.
It’s just one of those things that you need to be careful of mostly if you’re self-launching off the beach in strong winds. To help avoid this pump your kite up super hard (like 9 PSI) – And don’t be in a rush to launch, take your time, position the bridle the right way. Also, know what to do if this tangle does ever happen. Every kiter should study and learn the steps into recovering from a tangled bridle mid-flight.
For this reason, we say this kite is not for beginners. But for any intermediate to advanced kiters, you will love every aspect of this kite.

OVERALL NOTES
This has quite quickly become my favourite kite in the quiver.
Getting this much power and pull, with such fast turning and high performance is a real treat.
With the huge range in de-power, a 2 kite quiver is very possible to suit most conditions, and for travelling that is a
BIG PASS!

Well done to Ocean Rodeo and Aluula on creating such a magnificent kite. We can’t wait to see the next round of advancements!  ~ Ed

Australian Kite Surfari – A decade of adventure

Australian-Kitesurfing-Surfari-Cooktown-drone-sandbars

Drone pic of the lagoon out front

AUSTRALIAN KITE SURFARI HAS NOW BEEN OPERATING FOR TEN SEASONS. SO MUCH HAS CHANGED SINCE THE EARLY DAYS, BUT SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE, LIKE THE WORLD-CLASS LOCATION AND THE FOCUS ON PROVIDING EXCELLENT SERVICE.

It all began with the passion for excitement and adventure and us wanting to share the fantastic lifestyle we live in Far North Queensland.
We started with tents and a primitive bush shower. The kitesurfing was excellent, but you had to be a hardcore kiter to cope with the remote, harsh beach life. Each year the Surfari crew worked on creating a more comfortable base.

The Cabins on the Beach

The Cabins on the Beach

The tents are long gone, replaced by cabins made from water tanks. The blow-up mattress replaced by single or double beds. The cold bush shower replaced by a amenities block with instant hot water. Paully has put her creative touch on all of the upgrades to add her flair. All in all the camp and the level of comfort is unrecognisable from its humble beginnings.

The AKS Bus! What a beast.

The AKS Bus! What a beast.

Even the drive up has been upgraded. The old 4wds have been replaced with a modern purpose built air-conditioned 4wd bus. There is also the option of flying to Cooktown for those who want a quicker route to the Kite Surfari base, just a 45-minute drive from Cooktown.
Ant and Paully have created a world-class, off the grid kitesurfing location. The only way to access the Surfari Base is to drive 4 km up the beach at low tide. As the tide comes in you are landlocked — just your kite crew isolated on this magnificent beach. All the power is created by a solar and wind generator. The water is pumped directly from the sand dunes. Each year the camp becomes more and more self-sustainable with a variety of food grown on site.

Paully

Paully

This is what makes the Australian Kite Surfari stand out. No crowds, no shops and a kitesurfing experience run by people whose life is living one big adventure.
The Traditional Owners of this area only allow our groups to kite surf on their Traditional Land. This guarantees no crowds just our crew of like-minded kiters enjoying the perfect conditions without the crowds of other locations.

It's windy! Time to play

It’s windy! Time to play

It does not matter what level of service you receive; it does not matter where you go. You need wind to kite. Australian Kite Surfari has gained a worldwide reputation as a reliable, strong wind location. The Trade Winds in this area are relentless. Paully can supply weather statistics that only other places can dream of. Australian Kite Surfari supply excellent customer service with free coaching for those trying to master the basics in perfect conditions to help you progress.

Canadian Kitesurf Champ Elliot Drury

The main kite area is directly out the front of Surfari Base. Walk out of your cabin and pump up, it’s that easy. The bay is only waist deep with clear warm water for hundreds of meters, so if you have a kitemare, you merely walk back to shore. The bottom is mainly sand, not harsh coral, so it’s not aggressive on your feet or your kite.
There are a series of sandbars that go for kilometres that create perfect flat water Lagoons.
There are a few downwind runs with a safety boat that the crew can organise on the seven-day tours.

The cabins are cosy!

The cabins are cosy!

There is also a seven-night Surfari with four days of island kiting. This brings the reef and the beach together. Lizard Island, Eagle Island, massive downwind runs following Ribbons Reef and Australian Kite Surfari all in one huge kite fest. The self-drive, self-catering option is available on specific dates during the season and most of the offseason… If you want to tailor your own adventure this is a great option. This has been a hit in the offseason by spear fishermen.

Amazing starry skies

Amazing starry skies

Ant, Paully and their daughter Trinity now all live full time at Surfari Base. Living on site 24/7 you get to know the area, know the season; with the tides and the wildlife you just become part of the ecosystem. They have created an oasis of comfort on a windswept deserted beach. Their motto of living and riding wild and free looks like a reality for them, that many only dream of.

Sunset kites followed by a beer are the best

Once you have visited this fantastic part of Australia, you will understand why so many people come back year after year. There are no unexpected costs on Surfari. All meals and snacks, soft drinks, coffee are provided. There are no shops even if you want to spend money!
This is indeed the greatest winter escape. Let’s see what the next decade brings to Australian Kite Surfari.

Bandit 2020 Kite Review – Wave Test

Bandit_2020_Wave_Test_Kitesurfing_Copyright_Freedom_2

This year F-One Kiteboarding released a new extension to the Bandit series of kites – aimed at the wave riders, strapless freestyle riders and lightweight athletes it is the Bandit S. And yes it performs beautifully in the waves, spilling excess speed and drifting nicely.

But for some existing long loving Bandit riders this poised some confusing questions – Does the older style Bandit 2020 which is now mostly aimed at the freestyle and free-rider still perform well in the waves?
Well, we think so! To see why read on…

If you are a Bandit lover, then you will love the latest release of the traditional style ‘Bandit 2020’ even more.
Let’s face it we love Bandits because they are grunty, powerful loops, and still great fun on the waves.
The choice to only release the Bandit S (for surf) only up to size 9 is still confusing for some, but look at it this way: if the wind is a little light then you need power in the waves – so the next size up in the range the Bandit 2020 Size 11, which is the kite we trialed and has honk loads of grunt…and will pull you through those lighter lulls in between the sets, just like the traditional bandits we have always loved. BUT also there have been some noticeable improvements…
• A lighter designed kite, means the kite also performs well as a foiling kite in light winds, and turns and responds very quickly.
• An altered shape and design to create less lateral pull, meaning your lower back will love you more as the kite is pulling you up to plane easier rather than horizontal.
• Very nicely designed pump system – we wish all kites undertook this system! A system mostly used in other pump up watersports devices like inflatable sups, boats etc this system is rock solid, fast and very practical. Haha one day perhaps kite companies will decide on one system for us all to use… until then enjoy the ride of progression :D.

The bar as with most kite companies these days is looking like one mean piece of engineering. Very nice materials that feel beautiful and natural under the fingers.
Being able to switch the ends to either a 45cm or 52cm bar means you can get away with only one bar for your quiver.
If there is one ‘con’ we can comment on is when the kite is fully de-powered the safety rope is flappy – but if you’re riding your kite that de-powered it’s time to switch to a smaller size!

Overall the Bandit 2020 is a well-engineered finely tuned free ride beast. We loved it in the small waves and light winds we tried it in, and was great to hydrofoil on and easily stayed in the air in 10 knots; and a real performer for boosting and popping with a twin tip.

If you are predominately a wave kiter, then you will want the Bandit S for the windier days – especially if your spot is offshore as the S is designed to help you spill off excess speed and drift better when you need it.
But if you love your freestyle and twin tipping just as much, the Bandit 2020 is still a great performer in the waves – and the size 11 that we trialed was fantastic in light winds and small waves.

Our ideal two kite quiver in the F-one range would be a Bandit S – 8 or 9 for the windier days (20-30 knots), and the Bandit 2020 – 11 or 12 for lighter days (10-20 knots), still great in the waves and fun freestyle action and big jumps!

Make sure you try the latest Bandits this Christmas you won’t be disappointed!

Kitesurf Cocos Islands, and the Sunshine Coast Australia with Coach Ben Strowger

Kitesurf-Ben-Strowger-Kite-Loop

Ben mega kite loop in Cotton Tree Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast Qld has born and bred some of the world’s best kitesurfers, with the likes of 2010 Freestyle world champ Andy Yates; wave world champ Keahi De-Aboitiz; is home to wave kiting legend Ben Wilson, and is also the head office location for Freedom Kitesurfing! 🙂

We have it all here from waves, ponds, minimal crowds and sunny, warm conditions for a good six months of the year! One of the regulars you will spot if you visit Cotton Tree river mouth on any day over 20 knots (rain, hail or shine) is Ocean Addict’s head instructor Ben Strowger. Ben hailing from the UK has fallen in love with this place and now bases himself here, and spends his time teaching locally through Summer and travelling with Zephyr Kite tours in the winter. We had a chat with him to see how it all ties together, and how you can also get involved and taste a piece of this exciting tropical lifestyle.

Kitesurf-Zephyr-Tours-Holiday-056FKM: Hey Ben, I often see you flying about in the air down at the local Cotton Tree river mouth. You teach there with the nearby shop Ocean Addicts is that right?

BEN: Yes I’m usually there teaching or riding… It’s an incredible location- I love it. The Great thing about the Sunshine Coast is the fact that we have a very long wind season. We get NE to SE winds September through to April. Sometimes on a good winter, we will get a lot of Southerly to South South East winds which make prime conditions for downwinders. Ocean Addicts is located on the Maroochy River, Cotton Tree. An epic spot for both butter flat water for freestyle and dredging lefts and rights for wave riding at the back of the river mouth. Cotton Tree can work on several wind directions, anything from Northerlies to Southerlies and anything with east in it. In my opinion, it is one of the best spots in Australia, come into Ocean Addicts and lets go for a kite!.

Kitesurf-Ben-Strowger-Cotton-Tree-Sunshine-Coast-049

Cotton Tree Sunshine Coast

FKM: Ok so you’re the head instructor at Ocean Addicts, but also on the Kite Trips with Zephyr Tours? I have seen plenty of photos from Cocos, and it looks incredible! But I also see you’re doing Tours in the Torres Strait as well? Tell us a bit about those?

BEN: The Torres Strait Islands are between the top of Far North Qld and Papa New Guinea. We charter a plane for our clients to one of the most remote islands, called Masig where we kite the incredible ‘Magic Mile.’ It’s the most amazing flat water spot you’ve ever seen, there is ZERO tourism on the island other than us, so it’s a really unique experience… you’re one of very few that are permitted to kite there.

Kitesurf-Ben-Strowger-Dark-Slide

Ben Dark Sliding at Torres Straight – Butter Flat!

FKM: Wow, so it’s really off the grid, what’s that like?

BEN: Well its got all the things you’d expect to find in a small country town, there are just 200 islanders, who are fantastic by the way! There’s a school, shop, medical center, etc. The Masig people are very inviting- you’ll meet and spend time with the whole community. When we’re not kiting, we are immersed in their way of life, which makes you feel welcomed and relaxed. You’ll learn about and experience their way of life, like how to fish their waters and why it’s a privilege to share the catch with the community.

FKM: Sounds pretty special! What’s the accommodation there like? Is it a good place to take the Missis?

BEN: We all stay at the lodge with multiple cabins and base our days out of the Aupsirrium Eco Resort. We are working with the local community, creating jobs and resources, and help develop the resort. Its where we relax when we are not kiting the Magic Mile. It’s in such a beautiful spot, overlooking sandy beaches, coral reef, offering fantastic fishing and snorkeling! Its a great place for anyone that loves to enjoy the sunshine, beach, and water. So bring the missis if she’s up for a little adventure. FKM: What’s this Magic Mile your talking about?

Kitesurf-Ben-Strowger-Torres-Straight-052

The Magic Mile

BEN: The Magic Mile is a just that, a mile long sandbar, offering endless amounts of super flat water, even when the trade winds are honking 30knots, it’s still butter flat! It’s by far the best spot I’ve ever kited. It has perfect conditions to fuel progression in your riding, whatever your level. We are the only people allowed to kite there, so it’s magic, its never crowded and it delivers super consistent wind, pumping 24/7.

Zephyr-kitesurfing-tours

FKM: Sounds amazing! What can your guests expect from the tour?

BEN: Zephyr Tours are fully catered! All you need to think about is how much you’re enjoying it. No stress, nothing to organise, everything’s taken care of. There is free instruction, progression clinics, filming, photos, entertainment and heaps of non-kiting activities. We have our own chef serving breakfast lunch and dinner. Plus a large team, support boats and extra kite gear on hand if needed.

Kitesurf-Zephyr-Tours-Holiday-078

FKM: Sounds pretty lush. So how do you tie in your own coaching and clinics into all this? You teach locally on the Sunshine Coast with Ocean Addicts, but then can also help your customers book the ideal getaway to further their training in pristine conditions and environments throughout the colder months?

BEN: It kind of works both ways. A few customers, who I’ve taught to kite with Ocean Addicts have then joined me on Zephyr tours, and vice verse! I’ve had clients from Cocos visit me here on the coast, who want to pick up from where they left off, learn new tricks, demo the lastest kites or learn how to foil. So there’s a big crossover, I bring elements from both Ocean Addicts and Zephyr Tours together. I’m really quite passionate about providing the best experience I can for our customers. It’s important to me that I leave people a little better off, whether that’s progressing or learning something new, having a great day together on the water, or it might be getting them kitted out with the perfect gear to take them to the next level.

OCEAN-ADDICTSFKM: Talking of gear, I had a look in the shop recently, it’s like heaven for Kiters, Foilers, and SUP riders in there. You’ve got quite the selection.

BEN: The shops looking awesome hey! I think it’s essential to have a range of equipment, so we have the right products to suit each individual’s needs. Depending on their level and where they want to go with the sport, it can really help fuel progression with the right set-up. We stock the biggest and best brands in the industry, Naish, and Duotone, so it’s not too difficult to find the right gear for them, and getting people on the right equipment is what Ocean Addicts is all about.

FKM: So, if someone looking for advice on gear or wanted to book a spot on one of your tours, can they do all that through the shop?

BEN: We are always happy to help out with sound advice, and they can book tours through both the Ocean Addicts and Zephyr Tours websites! If anyone wants to find out more about our kite tours, the website has heaps of info and videos to watch. Or, contact me directly, I’m always super stoked to chat about our the destinations. Yew!

There are always waves due to the trade winds but for your best significant ground swells October to January are the best. October is my favourite month for conditions and why I picked the weeks for the Camp.

Will many of the guys and girls who you sponsor be there etc.? Will you be there too?

Yes, I will be your host for the 2-weeks kiting and socialising everyday, showing you the beautiful area, other locations and walking you through all the gear you wish to try — also very relaxed discussion on products, manufacturing and design.

All our sponsored riders will be there to assist and chat with you about anything you need at all.

What’s the difference between BWS kite weeks at Kingfisher and these? Is it much the same experience?

The BWS kite weeks are clinics hosted by Ben Wilson. Our weeks are aimed at product, fun and relaxation the Philippine way — no extra charges for gear usages, advice or being part of our group. Just get yourself there, and we will take care of the rest!

Fresh juice cocktails by the pool... or detox with an early night, some yoga and great food!

Fresh juice cocktails by the pool… or detox with a massage and an early night, some morning yoga and great food!

What are some activities you can do there in the case of no wind? What could the missus do while you’re kiting all day?

Sit by the pool, drinking cocktails, waterfall trips, lagoons, other resorts and beaches to visit. Pagudpud town for some cultural experiences. Rent a motor bike and explore the miles of beautiful un-touched scenery.

From the Green Yard Watersports Centre, they have SUP, Windsurfers, Wings, snorkel gear for rental and just great vibes with the locals. If you fancy Yoga and massage these are easily ordered on demand.

What’s the cost of these weeks?

There are no extra charges to join the kite weeks and demo our gear. Just advance book at kingfisher resort for the dates and get yourself there. We have lots of activities organised for the special guests of these weeks. It’s going to be a lot of fun!

If you wish to take home gear, it would be great to send a wish list to us ahead of your stay so we can prepare and help you arrange logistics to get your new toys home.

Should I bring my own gear too?

Yes, as we can’t accommodate the same sizes of kites to everyone at the same time. But you could definitely minimise the amount of gear you would normally bring.
