Long Reef Super Session – Photos by Martin Rasp

There are super sessions going down all the time around Australia. Occasionally the situation allows someone to fully document one of those, in this case Martin Rasp has given Freedom the insights on a Long Reef Super Session on Saturday July 18th.

Martin told us “The day before a southwesterly wind came in at a force of 35 knots. It was obvious that we could expect some nice swell next day but reality exceeded expectations! The bombie a few hundred meters off shore ended up a few meters high and even the main break was quite spectacular.

The only issue was that the wind in the morning was side off-shore and the strength varied between 12 and 25 knots. Few blokes watched and chatted on the beach then the first few gave it the try. In next hour we could see about ten brave kites on the water, mostly on 12m kites. I tried with my 9m North Neo but perhaps I chose the worst possible moment and hardly made it to the break and then back to beach. If I want to kite the Northern Beaches it seems I need to add a 12m kite to my gear collection. After a second try I decided to pack my stuff and take few photos for my friend Mirek and other kiters before leaving.”

Miroslav Botka (Mirek) managed not only to get out in the challenging conditions but jag some big sets. Luckily he's got mates like Martin to catch some action shots when he can't get out himself.

Mirek showed no fear, but the wave on this photo was faster than him.

...But one small mistake cost him a long swim back to the beach. It was nice to see Ben Willy checking on him and his kite.

Ben Willi looked very comfortable in the big waves and even showed off some nice strapless jumps.
